ToD Solo: Part 5 - Two Ambushes

So last time the raid on Greenest ended in utter and complete disaster when my party of 4 heroes was wiped at the mill. This is the second time the party is defeated. The first time only one of them actually died but this time half of the party perished, leaving only two of the original adventurers alive: Ignomini the tiefling with the prophetic fate and Pypui the cult escapee with a price on her head.

This second defeat happened in a location far from the keep. According to the adventure it will take reinforcements ten minutes to get there, which means that the chances for rescue are next to non-existent. The options we have now are either to start a total new group of adventurers or find a way to continue the story of Ignomini and Pypui. The way I see it there are two possibilities for this:

  1. Pypui and Ignomini are brought to the keep to be ransomed by Cyanwrath for a duel.
  2. Pypui and Ignomini are brought to the cult's camp as slaves.

There are clear problems with both of these arches. The problem with the ransom is that there would need to be a way for Pypui to be brought to the keep without Frulam Mondath actually recognizing her. This could be done by having her face smeared with grime.

The problem with the second option is that almost nothing has been written about the camp's inner workings. I would need to homebrew an entire section of the adventure and as daunting as this may be I think that I will go with the second option. Because there is no way of Pypui and Ignomini being able to face Cyanwrath in a duel this means that Sergeant Markguth is fighting him (and dying valiantly).

Then the two adventurers will need to recuperate a bit, which the castellan will gladly facilitate after all they've done. What I need is a reason to ask them to go on to the next stage of the adventure. So we'll empty the inventory of both adventurers of anything of value and introduce two new characters to stand up and bring them to their feet and into the action. Let's again make two new characters.

🎲Plot Hook: (4) Ontharr Frume, a crusading warrior and champion of good, is Maiko's friend and mentor. He has asked her to travel to Greenest in search of rumors of increasing dragon activity.

Maiko comes from an enormously productive family. She lived with her family in the city of Neverwinter. When the mount Hotenow erupted her mother died and both her father and two of her siblings were injured in the collapsing house. From one day upon the next Maiko had to take care of her younger siblings and she did so as well as she could. Her father turned to drink and then to crime to support his habits. Eventually he fell in with criminal folk and was arrested for his crimes. Maiko's siblings were distributed amongst several charitable folks who wanted to raise them. Maiko herself was assigned as a squire the Ontharr Frume, a boisterous paladin who for the longest time thought her to be a boy.

Frume took her with him to Elturel where she learned from him how to fight. She didn't share his religious convictions but that didn't stop him from turning her into a decent fighter. When she had outgrown her squireship Ontharr let her go into the world to - as he said - forge a name for herself. Maiko went to work on the river ships that sailed the length of the Chionthar.

After proving herself Maiko were assigned as a bodyguard to a traveling bureaucrat with whom she eventually fell in love. Frume had taught her how to fight but Muse taught her how to love. They traveled for quite a while before one day they were set upon a dragon. Both were critically wounded and the dragon flew away with their horses. While staggering along they met a group of robed figures on horseback who offered their help. They lifted the two wounded people onto the horses where Maiko lost her senses.

When she woke up she was back in Elturel, under the care of Ontharr's order. He told her that he didn't know the wereabouts of Muse. It took a long time for Maiko's body to heal but her soul never fully recovered. She undertook several trips to find Muse but has so far been unsuccessful. Recently Ontharr has heard rumors of dragon activity in the Greenfields and to distract Maiko from her sorrows he has sent her to Greenest.

From her Background Maiko gains proficiency in Athletics and Perception as well the use of navigator's tools and water vehicles. Maiko's background leads me to the following characteristics:

Personality Traits: My friends know they can rely on me, no matter what. I work hard so that I can play hard when the work is done.

Ideal: Fairness: We all do the work so we all share in the reward.

Bond: I'm loyal to Ontharr Frume, he gave me a new life and I cannot thank him enough.

Flaw: Once I start drinking it's hard for me to stop.

🎲 Rolled Stats: 13, 14, 15, 15, 16, 16
Racial Bonuses: Charisma +2, Two others +1

STRENGTH: 16 (+3) | DEXTERITY: 16 (+3) | CONSTITUTION: 16 (+3)
INTELLIGENCE: 14 (+2) |
WISDOM: 15 (+2) | CHARISMA: 16 (+3)

Maiko has amazing stats. She is the full package. No wonder that both Ontharr Frume and Muse were smitten by her. She is both strong and agile, smart and wise, healthy and charismatic and enjoys a good drink. With these attributes she is true leader material and will therefore take the Battlemaster subclass. As a halfelf she also gets proficiency in two more skills. I'll take persuasion and insight, because Maiko is a true people person. The third language she speaks besides Common and Elvish will of course be Infernal because of Muse.

🎲HP: (10+3)+(2+3)= 13+5 = 18

Fighting Style: Defense for extra AC
Class Skills: History, Animal Handling

🎲Starting Wealth: 110g  Spent: 110g
💰Starting Equipment: Studded Leather, Katana (Greatsword), Wakizashi (Shortsword), 10 shurikans (darts), Bag (Backpack), Blanket, Bedroll, Waterskin, Common Clothes, Mess kit, Whetstone, Soap, 7 Candles

Ignomini:   +6 HP, Fighting Style: Defense, Divine Smite, Spellcasting.
                    Prepared Spells

All three also finish a short rest, using their new Hit Dice to restore some health, which still leaves the option of using a healer's kit later during the night.

Now we need to build a new character since Cuauhtémoc has died. Let's figure out who our new adventurer is, using the 'This is your life' tables in Xanathar's Guide to Everything again.

🎲Race: (43) Dwarf
🎲Class: (18) Cleric
🎲Occupation: (2) Academic
🎲Gender: Homebrew Table: [d10: 1-4 male, 5-8 female, 9 nonbinary, 10 DM's choice]: (5) female
🎲Name: (26) Eridred
🎲Clan name: (9) Bloodkith

New Character: Eridred Bloodkith, the dwarven cleric with the Sage background

🎲Parents: (83) Eridred knows who her parents are or were
🎲Birthplace: (76) Temple
🎲Siblings: (7)=>(4): 6 silblings
🎲Birth Order: (8, 8, 4, 8, 11, 10): Eridred is the second of seven children

🎲Family: (58) Single mother or stepmother
🎲Absent Parent: (3) Eridred's father abandoned his family
🎲Family lifestyle: (8) Poor
🎲Childhood home: (10) Rundown Shack

🎲Eridred became a sage because: (3) She was always an avid reader and she learned much about her favorite topic on her own.
🎲Eridred became a cleric because: (3) Eridred's god gave her an unmistakable sign. She dropped everything to serve the divine.

🎲Age: (27) 27 years old (Dwarves are considered young until they are 50 years old, so she is a very young dwarf)
🎲Life Events: 3

  • 🎲(61) Eridred spent time working a job related to her background. She starts the game with an extra 🎲 6 gold pieces
  • 🎲(88) Eridred fought in a battle
    • 🎲 (5) Eridred suffered only minor injuries, and the wounds are healed without leaving scars
  • 🎲(67) Eridred spend (more) time working a job related to her background. She starts the game with an extra 🎲 4 gold pieces
🎲Plot Hook: (2) When an orc raid drove Eridred's family from their home the People of Greenest took her in. Anyone who threatens Greenest is her sworn enemy.

It is somehow poetic that our new character has the same plot hook as Cuauhtémoc had. The plot hook also lines up well with her life events. Only thing I need to figure out is where they come from, so I'll leave the locations near Greenest and find an interesting starting location.

In the troll mountains that extend between the swoardcoast, the land of Amn and Cormyr in the East there is a monolithic structure called 'The Wailing Dwarf'. It is a statue of an armed dwarf rising 4.000 feet into the air, named for the sound of the wind passing over and through its cavernours eyes, ears and mouth. It was carved in the peak of the mountain known as Mount Batyr in a time many thousand years ago.

The legend about the Wailing Dwarf are manyfold and it was to the higher glory of the dwarves of Citadel Felbarr that Eridred's father made the long travel to the far South of the Swoardcoast to rediscover the ancient structure. Eridred and her siblings grew up in a tiny shack built against a cliff wall not far from the monument. They were poor in supplies, living mainly from the goats that they kept and the few vegetables that were willing to grow on the rocky slopes of the troll mountains.

For a long time Eridred's father, who was a follower of Dugmaren Brightmantle, the dwarven god of discovery studied the Wailing Dwarf from a distance but eventually he began to discuss with his wife whether or not he should try and enter it. When he did, it was against the wishes of Eridred's mother who feared he would never return, which he didn't.

However, shortly after he had abandoned his family a clan of monstrous trolls came down from the monument, searching the valley and eventually rooting out Eridred's family. With little to no weapons to defend her family with and her elder brother falling seconds after rushing the first troll with an axe she grabbed the first thing she could find, which was one of her fathers old books with engraved copper pages. Her intention was to defend herself with it but she wielded it a blinding light shot out of its pages and incinerated one of the trolls. The others were scared away by the sudden surge of magic long enough that Eridred and her surviving family members were able to flee.

For several tendays they walked through the mountains and then through the endless green plains of the Greenfields until finally reaching Greenest, where Governor Nighthill took them in. The people of the town helped them build a house and settle and Eridred even found some work at the local temple. She organized papers, tended to the garden that was so much more lush than what they had had at home and earned a bit of money while doing so.

In the meantime she studied her fathers book of prayers and legends of Dugmaren Brightmantle. She knew that the god known as the Errant Explorer had defender her and she took this as a sign that it was her turn to take up her father's mantle and use the divine powers for good instead of trying to gain wealth or fame.

Eridred trained with the guard to learn the weapon-craft as well and her powers grew. When the raid descended on Greenest she helped the villagers find refuge in the temple of Chauntea.

Speciality: Researcher
Personality Trait: I am horribly, horribly awkward in social situations, but there's nothing I like more than a good mystery
Ideal: The path to power and self-improvement is through knowledge
Bond: It is my duty to protect the people of Greenest and to make sure that no more innocent lives are lost.
Flaw: I overlook obvious solutions in favor of complicated ones.

🎲Rolled Stats: 9, 9, 9, 10, 10, 15
Racial Bonuses: +2 Constitution, +1 Wisdom (Hill Dwarf)

STRENGTH: 9 (-1) | DEXTERITY: 9 (-1) | CONSTITUTION: 12 (+1)
INTELLIGENCE: 10 (0) |
WISDOM: 16 (+3) | CHARISMA: 9 (-1)

Despite serving a god of knowledge, Eridred is still very young and has not actually gained a lot of it herself. Having to deal with a disfunctional family and a lot of trauma has left her wise beyond her years. She cares a lot, she just doesn't always express it in the best way. And having been brought up with little to do except herd goats, help around the shack and cook she is rather plump, not very dexterous and does not possess a lot of strength. She is however a rather healthy person after growing up in the mountain air.

Dwarven Tool proficiency: Brewer's Tools (Her specialty is Kumis, a creamy drink made from fermented goat milk)

Background Proficiencies: Arcana, History, Herbalism Kit, Alchemy Set (in exchange for not learning additional languages besides Common or Dwarvish) - I want to use a homebrew Herbalism Supplement (Found Here)

Cleric Skill Proficiencies: Insight, Medicine
Blessings of Knowledge Languages: Giant, because of trolls and one randomly determined language: 🎲 Deep Speech
Blessings of Knowledge Skill: Religion, because gods
Cantrips: Guidance, Sacred Flame and Spare the Dying
Spells prepared: Bane, Bless, Cure Wounds, Guiding Bolt, Inflict Wounds

🎲Starting Wealth: (10): 100gp + 10gp from Life Events = 110 gp
💰Starting Equipment: Scale Mail, Shield, Sickle, Dagger, Herbalism Kit, Brewer's Supplies, Backpack, Holy Symbol (Her fathers book, deduct money for restoration), Tinderbox, 10 pieces of chalk, Bedroll, Blanket, 10 Candles, Common Clothes, 10 pages of parchment, 5 ink pens, 1 bottle of ink, Sealing Wax, Soap, Whetstone
Remaining funds: 6 silver and 7 copper

I think Eridred is lugging around a lot of stuff in her backpack, having had to pack up whatever she thought necessary back home and hasn't really unpacked yet, despite living in Greenest for over a year now. She feels mistrustful of fate and knows that at any moment things might go wrong, and that is why she wants to come prepared. Final Rolls will be to determine if she has managed to collect any herbs in the recent days. I'll roll three Herbalism checks, the DC of which is 15.

Only one of the three rolls is a success, so I will roll 1d4 to determine the amount of ingredients Eridred starts out with and and up on two. Now, I roll twice on the Grassland ingredient table, collecting an Arrow Root and some Bloodgrass. Arrow Root can be used to sharpen ammunition and Bloodgrass can be combined with other ingredients to be turned into rations. Because she has had time to do some research, I rule that she has identified both plants.

ToD Solo - Part 3: Besieged in Greenest Keep

The great doors of the sally port close behind the group and they are ushered through the narrow hall into the courtyard by the red-headed dwarf. The group of villagers that they guided through the town immediately spreads out, looking for family and friends as the courtyard and the open hall of the keep's tower is filled with fugitives from the town.

"Aye there, ya done something great bringin' those folk up 'ere to safety.", the red-headed dwarf addresses the adventurers. His eyes quickly dart towards Ignomini and Cuauhtémoc who are grievously injured after the fighting and both nurture bleeding wounds.

"Y'er in need of medical attention, I see. We got a few people here who can bandage you up, but you'll have to do with a few patches and some food for now. Our local healer hasn't reached the keep."

The dwarf's solemn face betrays his worries and distress. Inspecting a deep cut on Cuauhtémoc's arm he starts maneuvering the party towards the hall. "Name's Escobert by the way for those that aren't form 'round 'ere. I'm the castellan, so I need to get to my guards. Since y'er fightin' folks, come find me if y'er bandaged up and willin' to lend a hand in the defense. Alright? O'er there, that lady with the headscarf, she's got bandages and ointment, she'll sort ya out."

And he's off, busily hurrying towards the bannisters to confer with his guards. Halfway through the courtyard however, Kashi catches up with him. "Pardon me, castellan. Do you perchance know if a scholar names Leosin Erlanthar is in town, or in the keep? He's an acquaintance of mine and I was said to meet him here."

Escobert turns and gloomily shakes his head. "I'm sorry, lad. I've been occupied up 'ere, wouldn't know anything about it. Name's not familiar to me but there's a lotta folks 'ere. Ask around, I hope ya find yer friend. Now, I really gotta run."

A bit later Kashi meets up with Ignomini, who's wounds have been bandaged and who is now nursing a cup of hot broth in his surprisingly delicate hands.

"Nothing, I've found out nothing.", grunts Kashi, who has done a sweep of the courtyard and the stables where many are taking shelter from the night's violence.

"I have.", is the reply. The tiefling takes a moment to sip the hot liquid and then hold it out for the fighter to drink as well. He had been asking questions not only with the woman nursing his wounds but also with servants and kitchen staff and had gotten some news, if not much. "Apparently there's a whole group of scholars who was passing through on their way from Candlekeep to the East. There was an 'elf or something alike' with them.", he recounts, mimicking the affectations. "That must be master Erlanthar. He is somewhere in town, but not in the keep apparently."

"That does us little good", Kashi has been taking a few deep sips from the broth and now hands back his cup. "Not with the dragon about and the keep encircled. I've been on the battlements, those bastards are everywhere. But at least the dragon is nowhere to be seen for the moment."

"After night comes dawn, my friend", recites Ignomini and puts a hand on Kashi's shoulder. "Let's see if we can't make ourselves useful here in the meantime. Did you see the castellan?"

"A castellan, that's an odd word...", Kashi replies, before actually answering. "I've seen him go up to the tower. He must be there still. Perhaps we should seek him out indeed. How's the young lad with the hard to pronounce name?"

"Cuauhtémoc?", the tiefling seems to have no trouble with pronunciation. "He's injured badly, but he'll pull through. The way the people here treat him...he is still so young but already more of a man than many twice his age."

"Age is just a number, when you grow up is determined by many other factors. Let's go and find the Red.", Kashi does not appear to want to talk much about this and rushes up the stone steps with Ignomini on his heels.

From the battlements the men can see the destruction reigning all around. Greenest is in flames, many houses burning lustily and it appears that haystacks and -bales have been put to the torch and rolled into central areas for better lighting. Black smoke curls up, clouding the night sky and the red glow of the fires in combination with the fumes and vapors turn the peaceful village into a scenery that would befit any nightmare. Shapes of different sizes dart from house to house, somewhere an animal cries in its dying fits, calls from voices both brutish and scared echo to the keep, the words incomprehensible but the tone telling of fear and violence.

Around the corner they go and up a second flight of stairs. The night wind blows strong here on the keep's tower. About twenty guards are here, arrows and bolts at the ready. Some stare out over the castle walls, others keep an anxious eye on the sky. The castellan stands next to an elderly man with long grey hair and a stern face that is hidden behind bandages covering the right side of his head. They are currently talking but turn at the two adventurers when they approach.

"Who is this now?", asks the older man.

"Governor, these are two of the strangers I told yer about.", explains Escobert. "Haven't made proper introductions yet. This is governor Tarbaw Nighthill, lord of Greenest and the keep currently harberin' ye.", he begins with just those introductions. After learning their names the governor stands up, despite his injuries seemingly still strong and full of willpower.

"Gentlemen, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for aiding my people.", he says. "I'll have a proper reward for you if we live through tonight. For now I need to see to the defense of my town."

"We've come for that.", says Kashi. "The castellan asked us to come and see him if we were ready for some work. Well, here we are."

"And yer friend 'ere still looks as if he might collapse at any moment if those bandages didn't hold him together so tightly.", despite the seriousness of the situation there is still room for a jib from the redheaded dwarf. "But I got a nice, easy job that needs doin' that won't immediately kill yer if yer not bein' stupid about it."

He explains that below the keep there is an old supply tunnel leading to the stream that runs through the village. It hasn't been used much but might be the perfect way to bypass the raiders. Through a secret exit there might be a chance to get more water and possible even sneak some more townsfolk into the keep.

"But since there's been no foot traffic I believe the waterside rats 'ave taken to nest in there. If ye would be so nice to clear them out, we can safely use the tunnels without getting bit too much." explains Escobert, pulling a rusty key from his considerable ring. "'Ere, this'll get ye inside. Probably need to shift some crates, the entrance is below the kitchens in the back of the cellar."

Ignomini is the one who takes the key. "We will try to clear out the tunnel, castellan.", he says while indicating a bow to the governor.

"We better ask the two others if they want to join us.", he adds once the two men are down the stairs and out of earshot. "I've some experience with harbor rats. Fierce little critters, I am not looking to get my tail chewed off."

Cuauhtémoc and Pypui are easy to be found. The woman is cleaning and checking her whips for any damage while the lad is entertaining a few children with an account of the hunt in an effort to divert their attention from the horrors outside of the walls. Despite being bandaged up he still looks weak but immediately spring to his feet when hearing about the mission.

But Pypui speaks up first: "Rats? I'll take charge then, I used to train my skills with the whips on alley rats since my teenage years. But in case they're in the majority we better come up with a plan. I've seen swarms of angry rats tear down large guard dogs in a matter of seconds. If we are going to try and attack their nests, they'll fight fiercely."

"Let's have a look at the tunnel first, maybe we'll come up with an idea once we see it.", suggests Cuauhtémoc and the group heads down into the cellars.

The door is hidden behind a large stack of barrels of beer that need to be rolled to the side before gaining access to the door itself which is made of sturdy, but ancient wood reinforced with iron. With the key from Escobar it opens stiffly revealing a dark hole of a tunnel chocked with cobwebs.

"If any of you are able to conjure up a bit of flame to burn away these webs, this would be the most opportune moment to do so.", jokes Pypui. But her sarcastic expression shapes into suprise when Kashi sticks out his hand and a small bead of flame begins to burn within it. "Oh, that is useful!", she says.

"It has its uses indeed,", is the response and Kashi hurls the bead of flame into the tunnel where it burns away a thin trail of the cobwebs.

"You may go first then.", says Pypui. "Don't miss the spiders with that flame, I don't want them in my hair if you don't mind."

Kashi pulls an annoyed face but ignites both of his hands, stepping into the tunnel to begin and burn away all the webbing step by step.

"Wait, Buddy can scout ahead for us.", says Cuauhtémoc and takes from his pocket a rather rotund, grey rat that looks up at the adventurers with beady eyes full of intelligence. "He can check if we're running into troubles behind all those webs."

"And he'll tell us?", asks Pypui skeptically.

"He will tell me.", replies the young lad with a stern face, not looking like he is joking. "Buddy is well trained.", he adds and lowers the rat onto the floor next to Pypui.

"Sneak ahead,", he instructs. "Let me know if we're in danger or need to be extra careful."

"By dawn's glory.", mutters Ignomini as the rat appears to actually nod before it skitters ahead through the tunnel that Kashi is clearing. "The little fellow understands the spoken tongue. That is a useful pet to have, my young friend."

"He's more than a pet", says Cuauhtémoc, suddenly with a sulking frown that betrays his age.

There is silence in the underground tunnel as Kashi slowly moves his flaming hand across the ceiling, sending spiders to run for their lives and burning away the accumulated architectural wonders of the arachnids that have been left untouched for decennia. Then the plump rat returns, casually walking past the others to return to his master. Sat in his cupped hand he begins to clean his whiskers.

"He says that there are two nests of rats ahead, there are a lot of them. He's not too god with numbers but it must be several dozens. We better find away to attack them from a distance before getting swarmed.

"I'll have questions about you talking with that rat later", mutters Pypui.

"Why?", interrupts Kashi. "There are many who have the art to speak with the small critters of the land where I come from. Yet it still seems to surprise people every time."

"I'll have some questions about where you come from then as well.", begins the woman but the tiefling interrupts the bickering.

"The barrels.", says Ignomini. "We can roll some barrels into the nests, maybe crush a few of the critters with them.

This appears to be the best idea they currently have, so Kashi seizes his clearing of the cobwebs and instead the group makes way for him and Ignomini to heave a heavy barrel of ale into the tunnel and past the group.

"Alright, ready your weapons.", says Kashi. "They are not going to like this."

Together with the tiefling he pushes the barrel forwards. As it starts to gain speed Kashi lights up a flame in his hands again and tosses it after the barrel. In the light of the flying spark of flame the group sees that the tunnel comes to a slight bend and here the floor is stacked knee-high with refuse. From tiny holes in the dirt the faces of rats leer at the advancing flame. Then the flame hits and the tunnel reverberates with agonized squeals just moments before the rolling barrels crashes into the rat nest, crushing many small bodies under its weight. For a moment it appears as if the group has devastated the entirety of the swarm but then the tone of the squeaking from a dozen tiny throat turns to aggression and from the nest a wave of small, brown-furred bodies rises as the angry rats turn to attack the intruders into their territory.

Cuauhtémoc attempts to shoot a bolt into the advancing swarm but it ricochets harmlessly from the tunnel wall, doing no damage what so ever. Then the rats are upon the group but before their hungry teeth can sink into Kashi's flesh Pypui's readied whip whizzes past him and knocks out two of the little critters. The swarm hesitates for a moment and Kashi uses this opportunity to crush five more of them with the broad side of his axe, the rest scatters back into the tunnel. But the danger has not passed, because more of the rats are on their way, in an angry frenzy wanting to defend their home.

"Back, back, give us some distance.", calls out Kashi as he throws another small handful of flames towards the angry critters, burning a few of them. Slowly, awkwardly the group starts to back up. Then the rats suddenly surge forwards and swarm Kashi. The man cries out in horror as the angry rodents climb his armor like a wall and sharp teeth snap in the direction of his vulnerable face.

Ignomini, unable to reach the swarm calls out: "Protect your eyes! Protect your eyes!" and raises the metal lamp he had been using. "Strike true, my friends, we've dealt with worse tonight!", he tries to encourage his companions, providing light for their attacks.

Pypui swings her whips as well as she can but the space she is maneuvering in is cramped and she only manages to kill two of the rodents with the butt end of her weapon. Cuauhtémoc, with the aid from Ignomini's lamp leans past the woman, slashing out with his scimitar, scraping a few of the rats off Kashi's armor. From his shoulder the fat rat jumps into the fray but falls to the ground, holding another one of his species firmly under his paws. Tiny teeth slash through a tiny throat and Cuau's familiar takes another of the many foes out of the equation.

Kashi is panicking. Trying to protect his face with one hand he wildly slashes around with his battleaxe, striking sparks out of the walls but not diminishing the swarm of tiny assailants that find any opening in his guard they can, biting at cheeks. Wailing in pain the man falls to the ground, bleeding out of dozen's of tiny wounds, gasping for air in blind fear.

Now Ignomini pushes past the group, his armor scraping against the rough rock walls of the tunnel. "Don't despair, Kashi. After night there comes dawn!", he calls out, stepping into and over the churning mass of rats. His hand grabs Kashi's wrist and the amulet around the tieflings throat begins to glow as some measurement of divine energy flows into Kashi's body, healing a few of the tiny cuts.

And now the group unleashes hell onto the rats. With bare hands they grab at the critters, pulling them off Kashi. Whips crack, blades cut, a singular, plump rogue rat assassinates two of his kind and the last of the fleeing rodents finds its death under Ignomini's boot.

The battle is won, but at quite a price. While two of the party were already in a pretty rough shape now Kashi as well looks as if he had had an encounter with a particularly bad tempered thorn bush, cuts and tiny bite marks covering every bit of exposed skin on his body. None the less he refuses backing down before completing the task if there is any chance to finish it.

Cuauhtémoc sends buddy into the tunnel and after the rat familiar reports that the danger underground has passed, the group, lighting torches to aid Kashi's magical flame advance slowly, clearing the tunnel of cobwebs and filth. At the end they reach a rusty metal grate door that opens into a thicket of shrubs obscuring it from the other side. Pypui deftly opens the grate with the key but after sticking her head outside she quickly backs into the tunnel and against the wall.

"Quiet! Raiders are approaching!", she says, her finger at her lips. All four of the adventurers freeze on the spot, remaining as quiet as they can while outside multiple boots are treading the soft sand of the brook's bank. There appears to be some urgency to the movement and the sound of footsteps is mixed with the ringing and clatter of armor and weaponry. But it passes and the group relaxes. When there is no audible notion of a threat anymore Pypui attempts another peek and comes back to inform her comrades: "It's only about twenty yards to the water but there is a thick undergrowth of bushes in between the exit and the stream. No buildings within eyeshot but a farm across the water is burning, which means that there is some light."

"And they are patrolling here, apparently.", says Ignomini. "We need to be alert of that, wherever we go next."

"Wherever we go next?", sneers the woman. "We're going back up to the castellan, tell him that we've done what he asked and then have a nice lie-down. The three of you look like shit."

The sharpness of her voice underlines how right she is. With the grate locked securely behind them the four return through the now cobweb- and rat-free tunnel to the keep. They find the castellan in the cellars, overseeing the construction of rudimentary bunks of straw and blankets.

He listens carefully to their tale and agrees with Pypui. "Ye all look ta be in dire need of a nap. So lay yerself down, I'll have someone come and bandage those bitemarks up for ye.", he says and grateful for the rest Ignomini, Kashi and Cuauhtémoc sink onto the improvised straw beds and stretch out their painful limbs.

Pypui however does not feel like lying down. The battles of the night so far have failed to mar her and she experiences a great anxiousness washing over her even if she does not stop to explain herself to the others. Instead she leaves the cellar and starts to patrol the walls. She finds the keep well defended but the guards are too few for the numbers they are facing. Pypui finds a quiet corner on the battlements and stares over the burning town. There must be at least a hundred raiders in Greenest now. If they made a serious attempt to storm the keep, they might even have a chance, despite the sturdy walls and the many crossbows trained to defend the keep.

For a long time the woman just stands there in the darkness, her hands firmly grasping the handle of one of her whips, wringing it as if it were the last rope connecting her to reality. Beads of sweat form on her forehead despite the relative cool of the night. Or are those tears streaming down her face? Whatever it is, there is no one out there in the darkness who sees it.

[Cuauhtémoc, Ignomini are having a short rest, Pypui is still up to max health.]

It is a bit later when Pypui appears at the side of her new travel companions. "Come up, the governor wants to see us.", she says blankly. Rousing from troubled slumber the three men struggle to their feet. With only a little of their health regained they follow up the stairs to the tower again. Here governor Nighthill, leaning on a crutch but holding a silver goblet of wine in his uninjured hand offers them drinks of their own, warmed above a brazier. They gladly accept and the leader of Greenest explains why they are here.

"We have been keeping a close eye on the raiders for the last hour. It seems the initial carnage is over. Some fires have gone out and it doesn't look as if they plan on burning down more of the town."

On a winebarrel a crude map of the town has been sketched in chalk and Nighthill points out a few key points: "The temple is still surrounded as far as we can tell. There is a lot of activity there. I expect that Falconmoon, the priest has sealed herself inside with whomever she was able to rescue. And the ruffians have been loading carts with stolen goods on caravan square. All of this is very well executed and must have taken some serious planning. I assume they are planning to storm the keep as soon as some key element of their plan has come to fruition. We must know what these plan is."

The old man's good eye takes in every one of the four adventurers. "The four of you are injured and weary, I can see that. But I am asking you none the less to aid us again. We need someone to go out into town and try and take a prisoner. Preferably an officer of sorts but we'll take whatever we can. We need to question them and...by Torm's right hand, there it comes again!"

He shouts the last sentence just as the eyes of everyone on the bannisters turns to the sky. The beating of big wings is heard first, then a moment later as the guards begin to scream in terror lightning shoots from the sky, followed by an opened maw that angrily snaps shut. The dragon has returned!

Three guards lay dead on the tower's top, but Pypui shouts out something in a strange language that none of the others can understand. Despide the horrible odds she pulls her shortbow from her shoulder and shoots an arrow at the dragon. The projectile bounces off the blue scales but she shouts: "He can be hit, therefor he can be slain!"

Cheers of desperate reserve rise from the bannisters and crossbows are fired. Cuauhtémoc's bolt hits the monstrous creature's underbelly and the dragon turns in the sky, his eyes looking down at the collected humans, puny in comparison. The air around the enormous horn on the tip of his nose is crackling with electricity and the monster opens its mouth, ready to spew lightning again. But Kashi calls out "Bedazzled and befogged be they!" and the air around the dragon begins to sparkle with magical lights. A moment later Ignomini's Javelin hits the dragon just below the clavicle. The tiny weapons however pierces the scales and sinks into the dragons body for more than half its length.

It seems for a moment as if the dragon is hesitating. Its enormous wings keep beating but it remains in place. Its clawed forepaw grabs at the butt end of the javelin and its mean, angry eyes flash over the face of the tiefling. Then a hail of tiny projectile sprays up. None of them do any actual damage but the dragon backs up a bit none the less. After another moment of hesitation it roars. Words in the ancient dragon tongue reach everyone on the bannisters as the creature shouts at them. Then it turns mid air and with a single beat of its wings disappears in the darkness above. The flapping of leathery membranes swiftly becomes inaudible.

Then Pypui collapses to her knees with a high pitched wail. He companions rush to her side and the governor and his guards look shocked, frozen in time. "What is it!?", he demands to know. "What's wrong with her."

The wail however ends in a tormented heaving wheeze before, after a ragged breath of air Pypui's next scream is clearly one of glee. She is not in pain, the whipmaster is as a matter of fact roaring with laughter. "What? What's so funny?", askes Cuauhtélmoc, his eyes darting from the hysterical woman to the dead soldiers as if he was fearing for her sanity.

Finally she calms enough to respond. It takes her a few attempts to form the words that move her to hysterics but then she bluts out: "Fuck this, I'm done with all of this!", followed by another laughing fit.

"Did she loose her mind?", Ignominy asks worriedly but Pypui has calmed herself just enough to be able to explain herself. "No! No, I'm good. That's what he said, the dragon! He said: Fuck this, I'm done with all of this!" She hiccups. "I haven't heard a dragon swear like that! Never thought I would!"

A few of the soldiers join in with the laughter and even the governor pulls a handkerchief from his breast pocket, dabbing at his mouth as if hiding a smile when suddenly a voice from down in the courtyard calls up: "The gates! They are storming the keep!"

A moment later the sound of heavy wood crashing on the front doors of the sally point rouses everyone from their moment of victory. The night is still young and there are threats abound. With most of the castle's guards distracted by the dragon the raiders have rushed the sally port and are beating down the main gate with a large log.

"To the courtyard! Defend the Keep!", roars the governor and the momentary relieve fades in an instant as most of the guard immediately rush for the steps down onto the western battlements, loading their crossbows and grabbing arrows to defend the keep. Ignomini, Pypui, Cuauhtémoc and Kashi however rush down the second set of stairs. There is no communication, no shouts, they just act. A moment ago they were battling a dragon, the rush of that fight and their seeming victory is still racing through their blood. A comradeship that has been slowly built this night has now been reaffirmed by the combat against the flying monster and now that the keep is under direct attack from mere humanoids, the four adventurers do not waver for a single moment. As the guards on the battlements are firing arrow after arrow down at the advancing raiders a loud crash signals the big gates collapsing and now rough voices and a terrible snarling growl echoes from the inside of the sally port.

From inside the sally port a single kobold darts, rushing quickly past. He has made his equation without taking into account the reach of Pypui's whips however. Halfway through his dash a length of leather wraps around his neck and cuts the side of his face. The little dragonkin whirls around in panic. The stone in his sling clatters at Pypui's feet. She blurts out in laughter that turns to fear a moment later when she see's what is approaching through the sally port and her next two cracks of the whips miss their target. Two more kobold's join it but luckily only one of their projectiles actually hits Pypui, bringing her the first injury of the night.

Cuauhtémoc rushes in, firing a bolt from his crossbow mid-run and tossing the weapon aside wildly to draw his scimitar when the projectile misses. A dark flame shoots up from the ground in front of him but he manages to dodge it without fail. Then Kashi is next to him, splitting one of the kobolds with a hue of his battleaxe.

"Watch out, inside the sally port!", calls out Pypui. Kashi turns and another bullet whistles past his ear. But the warning had not been to make him heed the origin of the pebble but the green scaled monstrosity that shoots out of the darkness, teeth bared. It looks like a wolf-sized wingless dragon and with sharp claws it hooks the side of Kashi's armor, its jaws closing around the warrior's throat. Kashi falls under it's weight, critically wounded.

"No!", shout's Ignomini, hurling a javelin mid run but he does not hit the monster that tore down his companion. From above some of the guards are shooting at the intruders but so far with no results.

The two kobolds in the courtyard drop their slings and storm forward with death defiance at Cuauhtémoc and despite Pypui managing to take one of them out the other one jams its weapon into the lad's ribs, knocking the wind out of his lungs and bringing him down. Cuauhtémoc's face hits the hard cobblestone and he begins to immediately cough up blood as his lung collapses and he fights to stay conscious in a desperate groan. Pypui's face turns pale as behind the dragon-kin another figure approaches, humanoid in form and wearing a cowl. A green, tattooed finger points at her face and a voice hisses: "Kneel!"

As Kashi's blood quickly flows out of his torn open throat a last kobold jumps over his body, climbs a stone bench below the keep's wall and hurls a rock at Ignomini. The projectile hits the tiefling the face, blinding one eye and chipping the cheekbone. The green monster lets go of its prey and scrambles over the fallen fighters towards Pypui, snapping at her calves without much success.

Ignomini, himself grievously injures, rushes forward to grab at Kashi. His hand closes over the man's open throat and with the divine power of his god and a prayer on his lips he stops the bleeding, bringing Kashi back from the brink of death. Tears are streaming over his face as he starts to pull his travel companion away from the fight, abandoning Cuauhtéloc who also is on death's door. "I am sorry, I am so sorry...", he mutters, making eye contact with the young lad as he tries to bring his friend into safety.

These two rounds of combat saw a lot of extremes. The drake tore down Kashi with a natural twenty and while one of the kobolds also landed a critical hit against Ignomini both the downed fighters rolled critical failures on their first death saving throws. The fight has become much grimmer than anticipated. Since Cuauhtémoc is well known in Greenest however I am bringing in several guards to aid in the fight in the hope that this is not ending in a total party kill.

There is nothing Pypui can do. She knows the magic, she knows the implications. While the monster that she alone amongst the four adventurers knows to be an ambush drake is snapping at her she slowly drops to her knees, bringing her throat in for the hungry teeth to bite at. With a knowing smile the cloaked figure steps into the courtyard for a mere moment. It is a woman, plump and wide-faced, her eyebrows meeting above the root of her nose. Her finger points at Ignomini and the tiefling falls, struck by another of the dark flames that shoots out of the ground and takes the last bit of strength that was in him. Seeing herself facing the many guards on the battlements the woman slinks back into the safety of the sally port.

Kashi however, healed by the paladin who now lies at his feet understands how severe the situation is. Forcing himself to breath rhythmically, to summon his bodies energy to tap whatever reserves are left he grabs Ignomini under the arms and drags him across the courtyard and up the stairs towards the battlements, away from the raging combat.

Six of the guards above have become aware of what is happening in the courtyard. They are shooting arrows down at the drake, some even hitting the monster. The projectiles hinder it greatly and its body sags a bit in the middle, its jaws snapping shut mere inches next to Pypui's throat. One of the kobolds however scurries over and its dagger finds the woman's side, jamming itself between the layers of thick leather.

"Let...her...be...", groans Cuauhtémoc, still fighting for every bit of breath, his head turning sideways and half his face smeared with blood.

Both Cuau and Ignomini succeed a death saving throw on this turn.

Pypui's face is filled with hatred but she knows she cannot win this fight. Standing up from her vulnerable position she turns and runs. Both the drake's teeth and the kobolds dagger rip bits of flesh from her as she does so but Pypui has her eyes closed, finding a second wind and heading straight for the tower doors. She rushes through and pulls them closed behind her.

While the snarling drake is slain by the arrows from above and the kobolds rush to safety, Kashi has grabbed a piece of cloth and is dabbing the blood from Ignomini's face. He pours water from his bottle over the burn and tries to lay the tiefling in a comfortable position. As guards rush by him to drive the intruders from the sally port and repair the gate, he anxiously listens to the tiefling's heartbeat, breathing along in relieve when he notices that his travel companion is going to live. He carries his body inside the keep and bed him on one of the improvised straw mattresses. A bit later they are joined by Pypui who is looking more grim than ever.

"I think he'll make it.", says Kashi with a faint smile.

"Good for him.", the woman replies. "The lad with the difficult name wasn't so lucky..."

She throws herself on the straw and closes her eyes. After a while a healer finds the three of them in solemn silence, mourning the death of their compatriot.

Cuauhtémoc died after failing three death saves. Next time we return to this adventure, a new face will be added to the party.

Because the group did not meet many encounters on their way to the keep and did not rescue very many villagers they did not level up so far. For living through this ordeal I am rewarding each of them 50 XP which is enough to level them up to level 2, which we will do next time as well.

Thank you for reading through my adventures, leave a comment if you've enjoyed them.

Rest in peace, Cuauhtémoc (and Buddy the rat)

ToD Solo - Part 2: Greenest in Flames - To the keep

Last time I created our four intrepid adventureres, the fighters Kashi, Pypui and Cuauhtéloc and the paladin Ignomini. They all have reasons to be in Greenest. The module starts just outside town, describing how the party has been traveling towards Greenest. That might be true for Kashi, and Ignomini, who hail from different parts of Waterdeep. However, Cuauthéloc has been living in Greenest for the last two years. He is a hunter, so he might have joined up with the party just outside of town.

And Pypui has stayed in Greenest for some time now, waiting for events to unfold.

Let's start with the two travelers:

Kashi and Ignomini both are friends with Leosin Erlanthar who has called them to come to Greenest. Kashi just finished a sentence of hard labor after killing the satyr servant of Dralmorrer Borngray. Ignomini in turn is searching for a way to bring his bloodline-prophecy to fruition. I would imagine that Leosin would have set them up to travel together, knowing that the just released killer and the paladin of the morninglord might have a balancing effect on each other.

"So, how did you meet master Erlanthar.", asked the tiefling, sitting on a stump next to the road, carefully placing another broken branch on the campfire. Both he and his travel companion had doffed their armor for the night and were enjoying the freedom of movement without it.

"It's a long story", answered the human male with the long, dark hair. He was plucking the already slightly scorched prairie hen he killed that day. Ignomini had been more than a little surprised when the strong fighter suddenly conjured up flames in the palm of his hand and threw them at the sitting bird, killing it instantly. Apparently there was more than met the eye with this traveler. So far they had not yet had the necessity to prove themselves in combat, but Ignomini now knew that Kashi had a few tricks up his sleeve that the tiefling had not expected of him.

"I enjoy long stories", he said, pulling the stopper out of his waterskin and taking a long sip. They had found a brook nearby and the water was cool and tasted earthy and clean.

Kashi shook his head, seemingly taken up by the activity of preparing their dinner. "Another time perhaps.", he rebuffed the invitation to speak about himself. "Suffice to say that I owe him a lot, my life perhaps and I trust that if he called us to Greenest, it's for a very good reason indeed."

Ignomini had to agree with that, but he doubted very much the reason was the same for both of them. "We'll have to ask him ourselves then.", he concluded the subject and started to whittle a green branch into a spit to roast the hens on.

"May I ask an impertinent question?", asked Kashi a bit later, when the bird was slowly turning above the flames. "How did you find your way into the priesthood of Lathander?"

"I would call that curiosity, not impertinence", replied Ignomini. "But you are mistaken. I am no priest. "I serve the lord of dawn as well as I can, but I have taken no vows. But I came to him as all do: From darkness, in search of light."

For a moment the tiefling seemed to consider his next words, studying the face of the other man.

"It is easy to fall into unsavory ways in the big city. Easier still, if many consider you already part of chaos. The easiest if you think so yourself. But I found solace and purpose in the temple. There is salvation in the surrender to a bigger power, if that power is a force for good. I trust that there is a plan for me, even if I am not yet fully aware of it. And I try to follow the right path. Today that path leads me to Greenest, I believe."

It was quiet for a long while after that. The two men ate in silence. It was not their turn to keep watch so when their bellies were full, they lay down on their bedrolls - the soft nights had so far not given reason for Ignomini to set up his tent - and stared into the fire. As sleep approached like a welcome guest, Kashi broke the silence.

"I wish I had faith. There were no gods where I was born. Or at least, no concept of them ever reached me. They seem far and distant to me. I envy you."

There was no reply and the two men drifted away to dream about gods or men, about destiny and darkness.

In the meantime, in Greenest it is easy for the storytelling if Pypui and Cuauhtéloc already have a connection. She has been staying in Greenest for some times, I'd say perhaps a couple of tendays and Cuau would have taken an interest to the stranger with the whips.

"That was close than I'd like to admit", said Pypui, looking at the stack of carcasses as it slowly caught flame. They had stacked them on dry grass and poured some oil over it, erecting the pyre on a flat bit of rock where it could burn safely. "Why do we burn them again?"

"It's an offering to the Gods, to Silvanus and Chauntea,", explained her guide, a scrawny lad of maybe twelve or thirteen years. Despite his young age he had proven himself very capable with a crossbow and had surprised her by shooting one of the creatures with a bolt of fire from his hand.

"The hyena's are a danger to the sheep, but they are creatures of nature as well. By burning them we implore the gods to create a better suited habitat for them, farther away from the town."

The boy was not the talkative kind, but whenever explanation was needed, he was rather eloquent, even if his speech was accented with harsh consonants that betrayed his far origin.

"Are you a servant of those gods?", Pypui asked, inspecting the weave of her whips for damages.

Cuauhtéloc hesitated before answering: "Not actively. But I respect the local customs. They are not my gods, but I'll bring them the reverence they are due."

Pypui was astonished. The boy's  thought patterns were much more mature than his smooth, beardless face would make one assume. When she had asked around for jobs, the watch captain had assigned her as an assistant hunter to him. Apparently he was well respected and seen as an equal to the adults.
She did not know how to respond and they stayed quiet while the fire burned. When there were only embers left, Cuauhtéloc shoveled dirt onto them to suffocate the heat and they left for the road. The sun was nearing the horizon when the boy spoke up, phrasing a question that had bothered him for a while.
"Why do you have two whips? Isn't that very impractical? It seems to me that they must hinder your movement."

Pypui grinned, her ego rejoicing once again at the attention her curious talent demanded.
"It did at first, but once you practice for a long time, you realize that if you treat the whips as an extension of your arms, they do not hinder you in the least bit. Just like a sword or axe, they have a predictable way of moving and once you completely have made yourself accustomed with it they do not hinder you in the least."

"I saw you practice behind the inn a few days back.", Cuauhtéloc admitted. "It looked more like a dance than a fighting training."

The acrobat nodded at this assessment. "You're closer than you think. I began cracking whips as a way of performing, to earn money on the street. Only later did I realize that if you can hit a candleflame to snuff it from a distance you can use the same motion to take out an eye."

Her own eyes glanced quickly at the face of the adolescent. Did she go to far with that description? But Cuauhtéloc did not appear squeamish and did not flinch at the mention of gore. He was indeed peculiar, Pypui decided.

Now, let's bring the two parties together so that the adventure can begin.

It had been a long day on the road for the caravan and its guards. Kashi and Ignomini, who after their shared watch had not discussed faith any more but had taken up staying close to one another were taking their turn scouting ahead of the slowly moving oxen. It had been a short time since they'd taken the second rest of the day and the two men were anxious to move on. From a farmer on his wagon whom they met an hour ago they had heard that the town of Greenest wasn't far anymore. If they kept pace and didn't encounter any surprises they might have a night in an actual bed ahead of them, a most pleasant idea for the road-weary travelers.

It was to prevent those surprises from creeping up on them that they had scouted ahead and they kept a sharp eye out for anything out of the ordinary...such as the column of black smoke in the middle of the Greenfields.

"This is more than the ordinary campfire", Ignomini said, stating the obvious. Kashi rolled his eyes.

"Indeed, but what is burning and why?", he replied. "Lets try to get a little closer."

The tiefling sniffed the air. "I smell burned meat and something else, sharper, like singed horn.", his yellow eyes narrowed. "Do you think we should alert the caravan?"

Kashi did take a moment to consider the suggestion, but then he shook his head and pointed. "People are coming this way. Two of them. They have already seen us. If they meant ill, they'd have had an easy time sneaking up on us."

Indeed there was a duo of humans approaching, armed for hunt or combat though somewhat eccentric in their garb. The young boy, not yet fully a man but armed with a crossbow and a scimitar in his belt, wore armor that resembled a sailor's garb and the woman whose dark face bore tattoos above the nose carried two rolled up whips on her belt. The boy raised his hand in greeting and the two men returned the peaceful sign. They four people met under a solitary acacia tree.

"Be greeted,", the woman with the whips took the initiative to start conversations. "Two people armed like you are out here with a purpose, that is sure. If you are seeking game, you will need to hunt elsewhere."

Her gloved hand pointed over her shoulder at the rising smoke. "My young friend here and I have made quite a lot of noise while killing these hyena's. But even if we didn't, the pack has made this area unsafe for weeks, there's probably little prey to be had around their burrow."

"We did not come seeking game, we just came to investigate the smoke.", the tiefling replied. "So you are burning the hyena-burrows?"

The woman shook her head. "We are burning the bodies themselves. As an offering.", her eyes glance towards the adolescent who nods and takes over the explanation. "It's a local ritual, to implore the gods to keep other predators away from this area, at least for a while. You don't look like you're from around here?"

"Neither do you,", was the thought that Kashi swallowed. The boy's skincolor was closer to that of Kashi himself, but the hairdo and jewels he wore in his ears and nose were foreign and clearly not from around this part of Faerûn. But instead of trying to satisfy his curiosity, Kashi answered:
"We are not. We are with a caravan that is headed for the town of Greenest, which should be nearby here somewhere?"

Both the woman and the boy nodded but it was the boy who replied: "Greenest is a bit more to the North-East. The caravan is taking the road I presume?"

After receiving confirmation he continued: "It should be only a few more hours, if your animals are rested. You can make it before sundown."

"You appear to know your way around here.", stated the tiefling. "Would you care to join up with us and guide us safely to Greenest? With a local guide showing the way, I'm sure the caravan master will be glad to make haste for town."

The boy threw an inquisitive glance at the woman who just shrugged, then he agreed with the offer. "Travel is slower that way, but there are a few spots where the wagon can easily break an axle if you're not careful enough. We'll accompany you to town. I am Cuauhtémoc and this is Pypui.", he introduced themselves.

"It is a pleasure to meet both of you and fortunate to boot.", replied the human fighter. "I am Kashi, and this here is Ignomini, a servant of the Morninglord." The tiefling indicated a slight bow, his finger tapping the sun-circle amulet he wore around the neck. "Let's head back to our caravan then and make for Greenest. After all, it is our common destination and company makes the journey more pleasant."

It proved easy enough to convince the caravan master to up the pace. All the travelers cheered up when they were faced with people from the very town they were heading to telling them that it wasn't far anymore. Most people even got of the carts to lighten the load for the horses and oxen. These last few miles were the longest but as dusk was falling Cuauhtémoc informed them all that any moment now they would see the lights of Greenest, just on the other side of the hill.

However it was Kashi who raised up a hand to make the wagons halt. "What's that sound,", he said in a hushed whisper. With all the carts stopped and the travelers holding their breath the sound of voices calling out, crying and shouting was audible for everyone. Something was amiss, something was gravely amiss.

A call escaped Cuauhtéloc's throat, uttered in a language that masked whether it was a prayer, warning or a curse. But the young man's intentions were clear when he started to run forward, his right hand tying the leather bands of a small buckler around his wrist.

"Wait", calls Ignomini. "Where are you going?!"

The young man doesn't look back, he just calls over his shoulder: "I help!", before running further. The tiefling and Kashi exchange a swift glance.

"Rats! Rats! Skeletal Rats!", curses Pypui, undoing the clasp that holds her whips in place. "Can't let him go alone, can we?"

As she runs off, that's enough for the two men to come into action as well. A fleeting glance at the panicking caravan master tells them enough: There is no help to be had here.

"Drive the animals off the rode, hide the wagons, hide yourself. We'll come get you when it's safe!", calls Kashi over his shoulder as he draws his weapon and storms after the tiefling that is already halfway up the remainder of the hill.

Quickly making speed to catch up with him, Kashi almost bangs into Ignomini, as the three who had run ahead have no all stopped at the hilltop, looking out over the town.

Greenest is in flames. Many of the reed-decked huts and houses have caught fire and black, chocking smoke arises from the chaos. People are in the street, running, shouting, trying to orientate themselves. And a moment later lightning shoots down, setting three more cottages ablaze. But the beam of blue light does not come from the clouds above, but instead from the wide open maw of an enormous, blue scaled dragon that circles over Greenest.

"This is insane.", is the first though in Pypui's head, "This can't be one, not against...that!"

But next to her, Cuauhtémoc already begins to move again, his face white as a sheet.

"What are you doing, fool?", the entertainer asks as he starts to walk down the path right towards the inferno.

Thick beads of sweat trickle down the boy's face when he turns, the dead stare in his eyes indicating that he knows how hopeless this undertaking is. "I must help them! Somehow."

These words seem to shake him awake and he starts to run again. And, after a moment's hesitating, accepting the eminent lethal danger they are running straight towards and internally condemning themselves for their own foolishness, the three others follow.

A blue dragon descends on Greenest, the adventure has begun

In his mind Cuauhtéloc tries to go back in time, to remember the white sand beaches of his home, the faces of his parents, his friends, his tribe. It feels like saying goodbye again but he does not want to risk to loose his adoptive family as well. This time he will fight. He has some skills and even if he does not doubt that he is running towards his doom if the dragon decides to swoop down at him, he needs to do this. This time he is no longer a little boy, afraid of the great confusing danger that has come to wreck his village, he is a grown man in mind and body, and he will protect his home with all he has.

He is following the Uldoon Trail that runs through the town. One of the first buildings here is the Golden Goat, where he has spend some nights, secretly meeting with some of the local farm boys to plot against a local bully or a corrupt guard. The tables outside the tiny tavern are still intact, half-eaten mills spilling off the plates, but the sheds across from it are burning like torches. The dried grass and hay that is stored here easily went up in flames and the fire has already started taking over the roof of the next building. The home of Vall, the weaver is spewing out black smoke but no one seems to remain inside.

Just for a Moment Cuauhtéloc is overtaken by horror at the destruction. He hears rush footfalls behind him but before he can turn around to check who is pursuing him he sees a small group of humans rush out from behind the Golden Goat. He recognizes Linan Swift and her family. Linan and her husband Cuth, commonly seen making belts, pouches and other items from leather are clutching their two children and are fleeing from a chittering band of kobolds that are in hot pursuit. Cuauhtéloc does not hesitate. With a hoarse cry he runs forward to attack.

In horror Cuauhtéloc sees one of the kobolds loose a small pebble from a slingshot that hits the already injured Cuth in the back of his head. The man collapses to the ground, his daughter Jayde screeching in horror as the kobold rushes after them and tries to grab the child. A second projectile hits Linan on the cheek as she turn and scream for her husband.

A javelin flies overhead, missing the kobolds but drawing their attention as next to Cuauhtéloc the heaving form of Ignomini in his heavy armor stops, his eyes focused on the chaos ahead. "Oh Lathander, deliver us.", he wheezes as he draws the next throwing spear from his quiver.

One of the kobolds, his eyes following the trajectory of the weapon notices the advancing adventurers. With a shrill yipping he shouts something at the others, alerting them of the incoming danger. He then starts twirling the sling in his hands but does not yet release the pebble.

Angelus, the young son of the Swifts, only eight or nine years of age picks up a stick, crying and shouting at the same time and accosts the kobold that is now grabbing at his sister but the small draconian creature just hisses at him until an arrow, shot from Pypui's bow hits him in the side. The acrobat has caught up to the others. "My, my...this is something.", she says, a strange calmness in her voice.

Hit by another projectile, Linan collapses, letting go of the broken spear she was clutching in her hands to defend her children with. Both of them are now howling with a deathly fear as two more kobolds are quickly darting in, nimble fingers grabbing at belt pouches and pulling at their mother's earrings.

Kashi, lacking any ranged weapons runs past the others, his axe held high and prepared to strike. The kobold that was earlier giving commands now throws his pebble at him but the bit of rock just bounces off the warrior's armor. But quickly another kobold joins his comrade and this one hits Kashi right in the temple with critical precision. Blood begins to pour down his temple and despite the projectile being minute this injury appears rather severe.

Cuauhtéloc realizes the precarity of the situation. Rushing forward he shoots his crossbow and the bolt takes out the kobold that attacked his travel companion. At the same time with a high-pitched wail the little Jayde picks up her mother's fallen spear and runs forward. Putting all her minute weight behind the attack she throws herself at the creature that had tried to pry off her little shell wristband. The spear goes deep into the kobolds abdomen and the little monster dies with a gurgle, slain by a six year old human girl.

The kobold that struck down Cuth slings another bullet at Cuauhtéloc but misses him. With a snarl the small dragonkin darts into a shrubbery to take cover. Ignomini, not prepared for a long jog in heavy armor throws another javelin but to no avail. Kashi's axe falls to the ground, hitting a moment before the warrior's collapsing body as another slung pebble knocks him out. With a cunning grin around his sharp-toothed mouth the victorious kobold retreats around the corner of the Golden Goat, out of reach from arrows and javelins.

Angelus, gaining courage in his desperation from the bravery of his little sister now grabs his stick with two hands and batters another kobold time and time again until the small creature does no longer move. A moment later Pypui's arrow ends the life of the last assailant that still clings to the little girl. A black kobold flees into the night, realizing there is nothing to gain here anymore and Pypui stands still next to Kashi's body. "No time for a nap, man. Better get up and...shit!", she cusses as she see's the man's state. The last bullet has left a terrible bruise on the front of his throat and his face is rapidly turning purple as he struggles to breath. "I need a little help here!", she calls as she kneels down next to her suffocating compatriot.

Cuauhtéloc is not listening to her. He quickly places himself between the children and the kobolds, firing a bolt into the smoke-filled night without hitting anything as the flitting opponents run for safety.
With no visible threat in the nearby vicinity, Jayde now throws herself onto her mother's body, grabbing at her neckerchief and shaking her, making Linan's head roll from one side to the other. The child begins to wail in a horrible cry of injustice.

With the combat won for now, the remaining kobolds quickly run for their lives. Ignomini steps to Kashi and, gently placing a hand behind his neck he whispers: "From night glows new dawn", restoring a tiny bit of strength to the fallen man's body, just enough to open his throat and bring him to his feet.
"You can't just abandon us at the first sign of danger,", the tiefling says as he turns away from him to look after the children. It is unclear if he is joking or not.

Kashi is crawling to his feet, breathing heavily, his hand grasping his throat. His eyes are shooting daggers, but then he sees Cuauhtéloc kneeling down next to the sobbing children and his expression softens. Instead of giving the young lad  piece of his mind he closes his eyes in the midst of all the fire and ruin and breathes steadily and deeply a few times to focus his bodies energy as only an experienced fighter can. As he does so, the wounds he has sustained stop bleeding.

"This is all very touching", Pypui says, stepping forward briskly and disrupting the moment of grief. "But we need to get out of here or we'll be toast."

Cuauhtéloc looks up and opens his mouth as if to spew and indignant respons at her but Ignomini sides with her in both a literal and a metaphorical way. "It's terrible, but Pypui is right. We need to bring these children..."
"And ourselves.", interjects Pypui.
"...to safety.", the tiefling finishes, a frown on his forehead. "Where would one go?"

Cuauhtéloc brushes aside his annoyance and indignation in the realization that the older adventurers are right. "The keep.", he answer's. "The Queen's keep, in the middle of town. The governor will be rallying the guards to defend it."

"Then let's make for the keep.", says Kashi, joining up with the other. He bends down, picking up the struggling boy. "Come, lad. Your mother wouldn't want you to die out here on the street. Come along."

Angelus tear-streaked face burried in Kashi's long, black hair the four adventurers see themselves faced with having to navigate the burning village to get to the keep.

Three encounters with raiders until the party reaches the keep.

The sound of breaking wood and laughing voices reaches the group. Just ahead the road forks. Now laughter erupts and a single cheer from a hoarse man's throat erupts. There are people ahead. Pypui raises a hand to draw the attention. She deviates from the road into the shade of some shrubs, keeping a careful eye out. Her training of balance and grace enables her to move without a single sound and even blend in a bit with the flickering light of the fire. A few barns to the right of the crossing are on fire and illuminate group of ruffians breaking their way through the splintered door of a house. No sound of anyone inside escapes and Pypui signals her peers to follow her in an attempt to avoid more bloodshed.

Travel cloaks bundled around the children the adventurers attempt to sneak away from the group. One or two of the raiders turn as they pass by, throwing glancing looks at the crying children and apparently decide that their current target is more profitable or more easily won. No one pursues for now.

Cuauhtéloc orientates himself. They are moving away from the keep now and will need to find another way. Perhaps they could just scale the hill while ignoring the road. It's not a steep climb, even with the children in tow.

But his thoughts are cut short when a group of five villagers comes running around the corner from the direction of caravan square. They are being pursued by another group of raiders with the flitting shapes of kobolds twirling their deceptively simple slings.

Kashi, thinking quickly, picks up both children in his arms and rushes across the road towards a few bushes. Dropping brother and sister here he warns them: "Stay here, hide, we'll defend you. As one of the nearing villagers falls, hit by one of the flung pebbles, Jayde pulls her brother under the branches of a young sickle bush to hide him from sight, the pale pink blossoming catkins offering them a tiny moment of beauty despite the horror they are living through.

Cuauhtéloc has his crossbow out. The bolt whistles over the heads of the fleeing townies and hits one of the pursuers in the eye, not outright killing the woman but grievously injuring her none the less. She stumbles back, dropping her weapon and clawing at the bit of wood sticking out of her eye socket. The young warrior advances, drawing his scimitar as he pushes through the fleeing people and faces the raiders head on, his face a grimace of hatred. He is met by one of the pursuers who slashes at him, managing to bring his sword through the leather armor and injure the young lad's leg.

Now Cuauhtéloc has the entire force of the pursuers to deal with. He narrowly avoids a few blows but another blade pierces in between his lower ribs and the air escapes his lungs with a gurgling cry of pain. But his attacker is hit across the face with a length of sturdy leather and recoils as now Pypui has joined her comrade. Her whips are out, spinning fast and with deadly precision. She cracks the second whip just inches in front of another attacker's nose, her eyes narrowed in focused concentration.

"Don't go that way!", calls Ignomini to the fleeing commoners. "There's more foes there. Join us, defend your town!" He jugs a javelin towards the raiders that sadly misses and sticks into the ground, taking away some of the impression he is making. The warning however is clearly heard and two of them, a dwarf and a man carrying a shovel turn to join the adventurers in rebuffing the raiders. However, the kobold he so narrowly missed turns an angry eye at the paladin and a moment later a flung pebble hits the tiefling's temple, drawing blood and bruising the flesh.

With the children save Kashi rushes to join up in battle with the others. His battleaxe cleaves into the knee of the raider who stabbed Cuauhtéloc, hobbling the man.

Cuauhtéloc lets out a battle cry that sounds strangely high pitched, almost like the call of some big sea bird. He focusses his energy, forcing his body to regain some strength from his inner reserves. Then his scimitar comes down with great force, cleaving through the face of one of his opponents, killing them in an instant.

The villagers now join up. A brick hits one of the raiders, thrown by an angrily shouting farmer. A kobold-pebble hits Cuauhtéloc but the raiders that are still in combat with the group turn in an attempt to run. They are cut down by the Maztican boy and the dwarven villager. This gives Pypui the gap in the group she needs to advance. Her whip chockes the life of the woman with the bolt in her eye and the other one whooshes over the head of the nearest kobold who cowers in fear but is staked to the ground a mere second later by Ignomini's javelin.

The surviving kobolds try to flee but only one of them manages, the other ends its wretched existence on the tip of Cuauhtéloc's sword.

The group has grown with the four surviving villagers. Quickly they look around while Cuauhtéloc grabs one of them, the baker Blondelle by the arm. "Where there more behind you?", he asks. The woman, used to the young lad's mature ways shakes her head. "I don't think so, Cuau. They all pursued us. Thank Chauntea you came to our aid, when..."

"Nevermind that, we need to get to the keep.", Cuauhtéloc cuts her off before turning to his fighting comrades and the collected villagers, one of which now has taken to care for the children clinging to his pockets.
"We can try to go across caravan square and approach the keep from the North side."

"Alright, let's make a run for it then.", answers Kashi. "You know the place, we'll follow. Everyone, stick close!"

Cuauhtéloc, followed by the rest of the group and the rescues, crosses a patch of shrubby grass between the roads and the buildings around caravan square and steps between the general store and a cobbler's workshop onto the central plaza.
When the dragon attacked the merchants that remained from the day had fled in blind panic, leaving their carts and wagons behind. Two figure, a man and a kobold are rummaging through one of the carts, otherwise the square looks abandoned.

Despite their attempt to tread carefully, the ringing of armor alert the two raiders and they turn. The man quickly draws a sword while the kobolds hand go to his sling. Realizing they are in the minority here, the man starts to back away quickly, his body flexed into dodging any incoming blow.
None the less, it takes mere moments for the group of adventurers to dispatch both him and the kobold and the group of villagers follows them across the square, illuminated by the firelights spread by burning thatch roofs.

"Come on, to the keep!", calls Cuauhtéloc, signaling for the others to follow as he darts through the narrow space between a moss- and ivy-covered shack and the burning potter's barn. But he's just through the gap when he realizes that he has made an error of judgement, believing himself and the group to be safe when in fact he has just ran into the arms of a group of raiders that had been patrolling the lower part of the keep's hill.

A kobold that accompanies the raiders slings a projectile at Cuau that rings his head and throws him to the side. A raider comes at him, swinging a sword but is slain instantly as Cuauhtéloc parries his blow and slashes open his throat in one flowing movement. But a moment later he collapses when a woman with a dark hood rushes in, thrusting a blade into his stomach. Another assails Kashi but without landing a blow.
Ignomini grabs the lad under his arms and pulls him to the side, muttering a prayer under his breath and restoring a little bit of energy to his body. Then the tiefling places himself between his comrade and the attackers. Just behind him Pypui takes up stance, cracking her whips with great precision in between the other fighters and injuring one of the raiders. Now Kashi too throws his weight into the battle, but his angry strike fails to hit his opponent.

Now some of the villagers rush in, using their improvised weapons or throwing rocks just as Ignomini is hit in the eye by one of the kobold's projectiles. The little dragonkin is hit by a bolt that Cuauhtéloc fires, barely able to stand on his wobbly legs. More and more blows are traded in the melee and the commoners are throwing shingles and bits of burning rock at the assailants without anyone actually sustaining injuries until Ignomini manages to smack one of the raiders over the head with his morningstar and Pypui who has made a flanking maneuver manages to wrap her whip around a throat and with a string tug break her target's spine.
Despite Kashi missing with his next blow the battle's tide has turned and the kobold realized it all too well. Grasping his little whip to his chest he turns and flees into the dim light of the night. Despite a crossbow bolt aimed at his back he manages to disappear in between the burning buildings as the last raider is cut down by Ignomini and Pypui.

"Oy there! Run an' get yerself in 'ere a'fore we close the gates!", a voice calls down from the hill. The figure of a dwarf with fiery red hair stands there, waving them to hurry up. And indeed, as they start to run there is another group of raiders that are rushing in from the direction of the little stream in the South, waving weapons and shooting arrows at the fugitives. But then they are through a dark, cool sally port and the dwarf smashes shut the heavy wooden doors. Two guards bar them with a heavy beam. The group has managed to reach the keep. For now, there is a measurement of safety.

A horrible roar shakes the castle on it's foundations and a large blue shape flies over, spewing a bolt of lightning that hits the single round tower. The dwarf's face pales in horror. "The governor!", he cries and leaves the party behind, sprinting for a set of stone stairs leading to the banisters above.

ToD Solo: Part 5 - Two Ambushes

So last time the raid on Greenest ended in utter and complete disaster when my party of 4 heroes was wiped at the mill. This is the second...
